Dr. Lobsang Rapgay - Dec. 3, 2011
Dr. Lobsang Rapgay was the first presenter in a new series of western scholars of Buddhism hosted by Land of Compassion Buddha. Dr. Rapgay conducts research in the role of attention in anxiety from a western cognitive psychology and neuroscience perspective. His findings have led him to research classical mindfulness as taught in the Satipatthana Sutras. Rapgay’s work has focused on validating the psychological utility of ancient Buddhist meditation practices using modern empirical methods.
Dr. Rapgay was a monk in the Tibetan tradition for 18 years, and is a research faculty member in the Department of Psychiatry at UCLA, a Research Psychologist in the Laboratory of Cognitive Neuroscience, and a clinical psychologist specializing in the treatment of anxiety disorders. He was most recently the Director of the UCLA Behavioral Medicine and Clinic, a training facility for psychiatric residents and psychology interns and externs for over 6 years. He is the author of over a dozen books on meditation, Tibetan medicine, and western psychology. A video of the 2 hour presentation can be viewed here.
